Measuring EVERYTHING!

Here are our morning building photos of the day.  I know it feels very repetitive to look at these types of photos every day.  Every now and then I say to myself, "I'm not going to take photos of the morning building today" but the kids won't let that happen.  They are always so excited to share their creations, and having a photo to document the "work" makes the clean up process much easier!  So, thanks for bearing with us….be prepared to see many more photos like this before the end of June!

ooooohhhh, moms, this is a little sneak peak of something special that we're working on!

Then, after recess, we worked on more measurement.  Miss C gave individuals or partner groups (the kids chose how they wanted to work today, alone or with a buddy) 2 pieces of string.  One was red and one was green.  They had to work around the classroom, measuring items to find things that were longer than the red string and shorter than the green one.  Everybody had strings of different lengths.  When they found some items, they were challenged to come and try 2 new strings that were closer in length, so the measurement had to be very precise.  There was lots of conversation using math vocabulary amongst the groups…words like: longer, shorter, equal, same, less, more, greater.  What a fun and engaging way to practice our measurement skills and to practice using math vocabulary in context!

It's a bit tricky to see the strings in the photos, but I'm sure you can see what we were up to!

Please look in your child's home envelope this evening.  We are going to be starting a unit on Family in the next little while and there is a bit of homework to do first.  The paper is bright pink, you can't miss it!

Today's Blog Brought To You By Yesterday!

Today was a was a whirlwind kind of day…lots happening (library, km Club, some printing, centers…) but not too many pictures!

We had some Pokemon Card discussions (please see the email I sent today about keeping toys at home).  This took much of our time today…sigh.

So, we have some photos from yesterday to share and a couple from this morning's building.

Yesterday, the kids continued to explore the concept of length and comparing lengths of objects.  Miss C gathered a variety of classroom objects and had the kids come, one at a time, to order them from longest to shortest.  We learned how important it is to line the objects up at the bottom and compare the length at the top.  Take a look….

Then we worked around the classroom using different units (13 unifix cubes and 3 playing cards) to measure a line.  Miss C asked us to explain why the numbers were different…because playing cards are much bigger than unifix cubes).

And finally, here are a couple of photos of our morning building….

The Picture of Proud!

Milestones can be big and small.  I'll let you determine the size of this one.  Today, just before going outside for recess time, we heard "I did it, I did it!" and looked over to see that one of our classmates zipped his coat all by himself.  Time for a celebration.  (By the way, I think it's a pretty huge milestone!)  Have I mentioned how much I love Kindergarten?!?!

U sharing! and Pro-D Day on Monday

Just a reminder that tomorrow is U sharing day.  Please help your child find something around the house that begins with the letter U.

Also, just a reminder that next Monday, May 4th, is a District Wide Professional Development Day.  There is no school for students.

Guest Photographer at km Club!

I was so busy handing out popsicle sticks and km cards that I had to ask one of our students to take photos during km Club today.  There are lots of photos but I think they are all important to share because they show what km Club is all about: moving our bodies, supporting one another and having fun!  Enjoy the photos!

I know, these pictures are all almost the same, but I just love them, so I included them all!

Here are a few shots from our building after km Club.  We've had a pretty great start to our Tuesday morning and it's not even 10:00 yet!
