A Very Busy Thursday

A few of the U sharing items we didn't get to yesterday….more undies!

up

while we were exploring our calendar today, we noticed that our pattern was different horizontally, vertically and diagonally.  After looking and learning on the calendar, we used our bodies to illustrate the words vertical, horizontal and diagonal.

(it's a bit of a challenge to make a diagonal with our bodies, but we did our very best!)

Miss Maria read a book about being brave today.  Before reading we learned some vocabulary words and predicted whether or not they would be in our story based on some of the pictures we looked at.  We looked at each word and guessed "what's in", "what's out" and "not sure".  Then during and after reading we moved our words around to the appropriate category.  We learned lots of new words (such as "offended") and also listened very carefully to the story.

April hasn't even started and it's already incredibly full.  Here's a sneak peek at the calendar that is hanging behind our door.  You will notice Km Club written all over this calendar.  I will fill you in on that tomorrow and let you know what it all means.

Finally, I've been making some little "reading beads" for the class to use (I think they might have been in yesterday's post).  Well, the kids have been watching me make them and some expressed an interest in making some themselves.  One student said, "I don't need you to show me because I've been watching you".  So I gave her the beads and the twine and, you got it, she knew exactly what to do!  These kids never cease to amaze and impress me!

I've also reminded the kids that it would be great if everyone could have a water bottle at school every day.  It was cooking today and I'm encouraging the kids to drink lots of water!

Uu Sharing

Today we shared items beginning with U.  I think we may have missed one or two, we will catch up with them tomorrow….

Here's a little look:

This afternoon, we had our second fire drill of the year.  This class is a-maz-ing!  They did such a good job leaving the building quickly and quietly and they waited so patiently while the drill was taking place.

After the fire drill, we did a little running in the sun….ahhhh!

Cows Visit Kindergarten!

It was so lovely to see everyone today after our two week spring break.  It was great to hear all of the stories and to see how happy the kids were to be back together again.

As promised, we started our day visiting with some cows.  We spent a very informative half an hour, learning all about what dairy cows eat, how they are milked and a little about their biology and life cycles.  The presentation was excellent and the kids were fantastic audience members, listening politely and asking really interesting questions.  Here's a little look at our new bovine friends….

This is Josie.  She's 6 and she is currently 5 months pregnant.  Calves are born after 9 months gestation.

Here we are looking at Josie.

This is Charlie, she is a two month old calf.  She already weighs about 140lbs.

We learned about all of the different things that these dairy cows eat.

Here is the milking machine.  We saw it in action.

Each dairy cow produces about 8 4 litre jugs of milk per day!

We were able to get a closer look at the calf and the adult cow.

A closer look at the food.

Today, Miss Maria read us a story about feelings and we drew some of the feelings that we have had on a post it note and added all the feelings to a chart.  Sometimes it's tricky to think beyond "happy" and "sad".  We practiced using more descriptive words like "excited", "nervous", "disappointed", "distressed" to really explain how we are feeling.  We will continue to talk and learn about feelings over the next little while.

A Very "Chill" Day

We had a quite a few kids away today and several others who were not feeling 100 percent so we took things a little bit easy today.  We had lots of time to play together and we managed to get outside before the rains came back.  We also spent some time saying our good byes to one of our classmates.  We made cards for our friend and thought about some of the fun times we shared together.

working on our cards...

Here's the girl of the day!  We will miss her and wish all the best in her new school (they are lucky to have this girl join them!)

Some more impressive building that we couldn't resist sharing with you.

I hope you all have a wonderful Spring Break and Easter.  I will miss you all and look forward to seeing everyone after the break.
