Lying Down on the Job

We worked on our printing booklets today, printing the letter H and drawing objects beginning with H.  (This Wednesday will be Ii sharing day, by the way!)  Many of the kids chose to move to the carpet to do their work.  I encouraged them to lie down on their bellies.  This position is really good for encouraging the development of the little muscles in our hands that help us with fine motor control.  It gives us a stable base, making it easier to isolate those little hand muscles, strengthening them.

Some people were more comfortable sitting at the tables to work.  When we sit at our tables, we work at getting our bodies into a good position for printing/drawing.  Our feet should be on the floor, our backs should be tall and strong.  One of our hands is used to stabilize our bodies and hold the paper in place.  The arm that's doing the writing/drawing should depressing into the table, supporting the hand that's doing all of the small movements.  These 3 kids are showing you exactly what it should look like!
