Counting and Poppies

Here is our Special Helper at work this morning, leading us through the calendar activities.

After calendar, we counted around the carpet.  This is a game that we play a couple of times each week.  Today we counted by 10s to 50 and sat down on the number 50, we keep playing until there is only one person left standing.

We read a story about Remembrance Day today (In Flanders Fields) and another one about Peace (The Peace Book).  We talked a lot about what Remembrance Day is all about.  Somehow we also ended up talking about mummies in Ancient Egypt (!!), but then we brought the discussion back to Remembrance Day.  Throughout the day, we worked on a poppy art project....

This morning we painted these cool black backgrounds that you can see on the tables.  We used black watercolour paint and then covered it with plastic wrap and smooshed the paint with our hands.

This afternoon we did A LOT of cutting.  We cut stems, large circles, small circles and leaves.  Then we glued them all down on our back backgrounds.

We are going to put the finishing touches on these tomorrow and they will be displayed in the hallway in the very near future.  The kids should be congratulated for their hard work today.  Normally, I would have taken a few days to get this far along, but they were working so well, that we just kept going!
