We went on a great field trip to the Artists For Kids Gallery today. Thank you so much to all of the parents who drove us to and from the gallery.
When we arrived, we met Mr Clark.
We spent some time looking at the amazing doors that lead to the Gallery.
Then when we went inside the Gallery, we learned gallery "etiquette". For some of us, this was the first time we'd ever been in an art gallery.
This exhibit is called "Art School High" and it's inspired by high school. Even though the subject matter was a little beyond us, we learned a lot about art...about line, colour, shape, texture, story, message and materials.
This was a print of the scratched surface of a desk.
This series of pictures was particularly interesting to me. These were done by an artist who is also a teacher. These pieces are the result of many staff meetings and the doodles that she did during the meetings. I may be prone to a little "staff meeting doodling" myself! Remember these, because they were the inspiration for the art work that we created later in our visit.
This one made me chuckle....hands up if you recognize this guy!
(Oh, I also learned a new trick today. I learned how to blur out the names on our name tags!)
We talked about how words can be art. We looked at this font and noticed the difference between these letters and how we print our letters.
Then we went into the studio and played "musical doodles". We each started with a pen and a piece of paper. Mr. Clark played some music and we doodled. When the music stopped, we stopped and then moved to a different piece of paper and then started again. We did this several times, adding doodles all the while.
Then we got another piece of paper, this time, graph paper. We did a similar activity, but this time we only worked on our own piece of paper. When the music stopped, we changed to another coloured pen.
Then we used stencils to add some print to our doodles.
Then we did something crazy! To add texture and interest to our work, we crumpled it into a tight ball and then opened it up again and did that 5 more times! The result was a piece of paper that was smaller than the one we started with, that had a lot of texture and was really soft, almost like fabric.
What a great gallery day we had!
