The Incredible Disappearing Day

When I sat down to write this blog post, I was reflecting on the day and realized that it kind of disappeared without accomplishing much!  We had two assemblies today and a Lockdown Drill, which didn't leave much time for much else!  Our first assembly was a recognition assembly.  We have this kind of assembly a couple of times during the year to recognize kids for participation in organized teams/clubs/events.  Today, kids were recognized for their participation in Cross Country, Peer Mediating, Band, Choir (among other things).  We also learned more about our school's code of conduct: compassion in our thoughts words and actions.

Then, at the end of the day, we went back to the gym to hear all about "Jump Rope For Heart".  A representative from the organization taught us about our hearts and how we can work together to help others.  We will be participating in a Jump Rope For Heart event at our school on February 15th. Kids will be bringing home pledge forms tomorrow.  Donating to the Heart and Stroke Foundation is completely voluntary.

We also participated in our first "Lockdown Drill" today.  It went very smoothly and the kids were superstars.  We practiced being quiet and still.

Finally, today we practiced counting by 2s to 20.  Most of us are able to count to ten by 2s easily, but we get a little muddled when we get into the teen numbers.   We marked the numbers that we say when we count by 2s on our hundreds chart and looked for patterns.  We noticed that the ones digit of each number is always 2, 4, 6, 8, or 0.  We also noticed that we say every second number.  I know these observations may seem straightforward and obvious, but when we are building our concept of number, they need to be explored in different ways.  If you are counting things with your child at home, help him/her practice counting by 2s.
