Gathering Natural Materials

This morning, we went outside on a nature walk.  We took our gathering bags and searched for treasures on the forest floor.  We are going to be making "journey sticks", combining all of our found materials into a stick that represents the parts of the forest that we want to remember.  We learned that not all cones are pine cone, some are douglas fir cones, some are hemlock cones.  We learned that maple tree seeds are found in maple keys.

searching and exploring and discovering

a douglas fir cone

a pill bug

a leaf skeleton

the perfect stick for a journey stick

a stick that looks like the letter "y"

some bark

a hemlock cone (so tiny!)

We discovered some fungi and noticed that they are often found growing on decaying logs.

Then we had a little run across the field and stopped at our meeting place.

Where we discovered a branch on the ground with clumps of maple keys still attached.
