Bears, Sorting and Earthquakes

We had a visitor first thing this morning.  The "Bear Lady", Christine, came to teach us about bears.  She showed us a toy bear that is about the same size as a baby bear when it is born. She read us a story about a mama bear and her cubs and some of the things that make bears special.

She showed us the model of a bear claw and told us how they use all 20 claws to climb.  They also use their claws to dig for roots and grubs and to catch fish.

She told us about the things that attract bears to our neighbourhoods....garbage (especially the food scraps in our green bins.

bird feeders

food scraps

even dirty diapers!

After Christine's visit, we started the day the way we usually do: we coloured and we played together.

After recess we started an art project, but they are not ready to show you yet!
The we practiced sorting.  We worked with jewels, each person got a handful and then chose how he/she wanted to sort.  After sorting, each person told his/her sorting rule.  Next week, we are going to sort other objects and then have our friends guess our sorting rule.

(I was racing around trying to get a photo of everyone - which I don't think I actually managed to do!- and my photos got a little blurry....sorry)

Then, this afternoon, we had our first Earthquake Drill, we practiced "duck, cover and hold" and then we counted to 60.  The kids did such a great job! They took the drill really seriously and remembered what to do.

Reminder: tomorrow is a Professional Development Day.  There is no school for students.
