Valentine's Day

Here we are delivering all of our Valentine's cards.

Ms Frogley came in and did some yoga with us before recess again.  

At Rest and Read time, we opened up our Valentine bags and checked out all of the kind words and cards.

In the afternoon, we went on a nature heart hunt.

We moved down to the field because we discovered that there are quite a few irresponsible dog owners that use the trail we were on and it was tricky to keep our shoes clean!  So, we had to make our own hearts (which was still pretty fun!)

Then we found a sign with arms and legs!!!!

When we came inside, some of us chose to work on a little Valentine's craft.

Finally, at the end of the day we had a very special visit from Ms Munro who came in and read to us. She read "Frog in Love", one of her favourite Valentine's stories.  We loved it too!

A Bit of Homework

A little homework!  

We will be celebrating the100th day of school on Thursday, February 23th.  Please have your child complete a "100 challenge" and send him/her to school with his/her master-piece on or around Feb.20th.  This is completely open to creativity and interest!  For simplicity sake, it might be easiest to place items on a sheet of paper, and sometimes this works nicely, but it doesn't for all projects.

Some interesting projects of years past:

Lego made of 100 pieces

100 stickers

100 dried pasta noodles

100 paper clips clipped together like a chain

Jar of 100 jelly beans

100 thumb prints

100 fingers (20 handprints)

10 groups of 10 different items

We have and will continue to talk about using 10 groups of 10 to get to 100.   Please remind your child of this strategy as he/she brainstorms ideas and work on his/her project.  Counting by 10s to get to 100 once it is finished, would be GREAT!

Estimation is also a math skill that the kids can practice - picking out household objects that they estimate may have enough for 100 for example.

I'm gathering flashlights for our upcoming study of light.  If you have a spare flashlight at home that you can loan us for a couple of weeks, we would really appreciate it!  Please mark your child's name on it.

Ms Frogley came in to lead us in some mindfulness yoga again today.  

 

We learned about compassion and talked about how we could practice it.

We discussed our school's Code of Conduct.

We decorated our Valentine's bags today in preparation for Tuesday! So exciting!

Flashlights Please

I was out of the classroom this morning.  The kids worked really well with Miss Harstone and our teacher on call.  They even got together with our buddy class and made some beautiful Valentine's mobiles (I will post pictures of the mobiles tomorrow).  I was only here for the afternoon and only managed to take 2 photos.  

For next week, we are going to begin to explore light.  It would be great if each student could bring in a flashlight that could stay in the class for a couple of weeks.  If you have a spare flashlight that can come to school, please label it with your child's name and we will return it when we are finished using it.  Thank you!

Oh, I also have another favour to ask.  Throughout the year, I collect the kids' artwork and save it in a scrapbook for you to have at the end of the year.  I have quite a few piles of art that need to be stapled into scrapbooks.  I wonder if any of you would like to help(?).  If you are interested in helping (it's a bit of a time consuming job), let me know and we will set up a time.

Q Sharing

It was the 90th (!) day of school today, so you know what that means....chacha time!

We "chacha"ed through the office, dancing and chanting!

then we came back to the classroom for some sharing time.  Sorry I forgot to send a reminder about Q sharing yesterday.  Most kids remembered to bring something.  If your child didn't, they are more than welcome to share tomorrow.

Oh this is a funny story.  I was out in the hallway, helping the kids get their snow gear on and I looked over at our neighbouring coat hooks and it looked like someone was upset.  So, I went over to see if I could help.  I said, "are you ok?  who's under there?"  There was no answer.  So I lifted the sled to have a look, and it was a snowsuit with the boots still attached...it made me laugh so much!  I thought you'd like to see it too!

I love it when we find hearts in nature.  

I will not be in the classroom tomorrow morning.  I will be helping out at one of our District wide Ready, Set, Learn events. The kids will have a teacher on call and Miss Harstone will be here too.  I will be back after lunch.
