a little bit of morning building
This morning, Miss Maria took us to Loutet park and we explored our sense of touch.
When we got to the park, we learned about our activity. Each student was paired up with another student. One person in each pair had a red sticker and the other had a blue sticker.
All the people with the red stickers gathered together in a close circle. They stood with their eyes closed and their hands behind their backs.
The blue sticker partner took a rock out of a basket and placed it in his/her partner's hands.
The person with the rock touched and felt the rock as carefully as possible and then his/her partner returned the rock to the basket.
Then the red sticker partner tried to see if he/she could figure out which rock was the one that he/she had in his/her hands. The other partner was able to tell the red sticker partner if he/she was right or not.
Then we switched and it was the other group's turn.
Then each partner group brainstormed words to describe how the rocks felt and Miss Maria filmed our descriptive words.
Then we had an energy break and did some skipping, running and hopping.
We continued to explore touch by learning about texture and doing some rubbings, using natural surfaces.
We worked together with our partner , taking turns, and made rubbings of the textures we found.
Then we came back to the classroom and brainstormed more words to describe the things we felt. Ask your child if he/she remembers what the word "porous" means.
Miss Maria was being observed for the last time by her Faculty Associate from UBC during this lesson. It was a HUGE success - a really rich and engaging lesson. I just want to congratulate Miss Maria for all of the excellent learning opportunities that she is providing these kids. She still has 3 more weeks with us, but today was a big milestone and she did a great job! We are very lucky to have her with us!
