Math, Music and Working Together!

This was a very busy group of kids this morning! Some people were painting with little paint sets, others were drawing, some were working on small building projects and a large group of kids worked together beautifully to build a huge structure.

It's a bit tricky to see, but they were trying to build a structure that everyone in the class could fit in.  There was a lot of discussion about how to make the structure more stable and how to keep it from falling.

This person turned himself into a plane.  Again, it's tricky to see, but he made wings and has a propellor at the front. So cool!

Working and talking together.

Here is a portrait of me beside the classroom carpet.  It's just too great not to share!

The class has been learning scales in Music. They performed "do a dear" for me when I came to pick them up today.

Today the kids were talking about combining numbers.  We spent some time looking at "10 frames" which is something we do quite regularly.  But we extended our learning today by learning how to show our number stories in writing. We talked about the symbol for adding and the equal sign and we found many different ways of making 10.

These are examples of two different 10 frames that we use in the class.

Have a great weekend!

Tummy Time

We worked on some alphabet stations today.  I wasn't able to take too many photos because I was working with one group.  Here's a little look at what we did...

matching beginning sounds of words

practicing our printing and letter sequencing

The other two stations were filling in the missing sound and reading around the room.  I'll try and take photos of those tomorrow.

We worked on our J printing today. We changed things up and some of us chose to work at the carpet laying on our tummies. This is really good for our fine motor development. Laying on our tummies allows our bodies to be really stable, our arm is anchored to the ground, allowing the little muscles in our hands to do all of the work when we print and draw and colour.

Some of us chose to work at our tables and that was fine too!

Acting Out Math Vocabulary

Please look in your child's home envelope for the results from the vision and hearing screening that took place on Monday.

After building our new graph today, we spent some time acting out some math words with our bodies.

Here we are showing "least".

This is "greatest".

"greater, greater, greater"

"less, less, less"

Today was J sharing day.  Here's what we shared...

Graphing

We learned how to build a graph and interpret it today (we also learned about initials and our last names, which wasn't the intended goal of the activity, but interesting nonetheless!)
We started with our question and then looked at the choices.  One by one, we came to the graph and added our card to show our preferences. Then, after we'd all had a turn, we looked to see which activity had the most people, which had the least and we figured out how many people chose each activity.

Happy New Year!

Hello and Happy New Year!

It seems that I forgot to take any photos today. We had a lovely day together, getting reacquainted and sharing all of the fun and activities of the last two weeks. It sure sounds like you all had a lot of fun!

The kids had their vision and hearing screenings today. Results will be sent home as soon as we receive them.

Please make sure to send back to school an extra change of clothing for your child. It looks like we are in for a spell of wet weather this week.

I don't have too much else to share today. There were lots of tired faces and some big yawns this afternoon. It's sometimes difficult to adjust back into school routines after the winter break.

We will resume our sharing routine now that all of the holiday festivities are over.  This Wednesday will be J sharing.  Thanks!
