A Rainy Thursday Full of Firsts

Today was a day of more "firsts".  We went to the Library for the first time and borrowed a book.  Our Library day is always going to be Thursday, so books will need to be returned on or before next Thursday.  We have a red tub (right beside the spot where the kids find their names in the morning) to collect library books that are waiting to be returned.  Our Library teacher's name is Mrs. Camplin.

We also did our first bit of table work.  We were introduced to our "work boxes" where we keep our pencils, erasers and crayons.  And we coloured 4 of the pictures in our alphabet books.  ("A says a, A says a, Alligator, Alligator, a, a, a….Bouncing Ball b, b, b, …..Cold and Cough c, c, c….Down Dragon d, d, d).  Then we took our books to the carpet, put on some "reading glasses" and practiced reading our books together.

We also had our first rainy recess time.  Thanks for sending such great raincoats and boots with your kids today.  We will go outside when the weather is wet.  The kids weren't too happy about it, but we talked about the importance of fresh air and exercise even on rainy days.  We also talked a lot about the importance of keeping our coats on when it's rainy and cold.  This might be something that you could chat about at home.

We also did "rest and read" for the first time.  Rest an Read is a quiet time after lunch where we turn off the lights, get a mat and some books, put on some classical music and rest and/or read.  Many of the kids were ready for some quiet time.  These first few weeks of Kindergarten are a huge adjustment for many of the kids.  The days are long and everything is new.  These peaceful moments are a welcome break for many of the kids.

This afternoon, there seemed to be lots of sniffles and sneezes.  I'm already fighting my first cold and sore throat of the school year.  Cold bugs seem to spread especially quickly through Kindergarten classrooms.  If you feel like your child is too ill to attend school, please notify the school office (604-903-3280).
