Curling!

Today we were fortunate to have a member of the Canadian Curling Association come in and teach us all about curling.  Before going to the gym, we watched a clip that taught us a bit about curling.  We learned that the ice is "pebbled" to create less friction and allow the rock to move more easily.  We also learned that the rock is made of granite and it weighs 42lbs.  The "target" is called the "house" and the centre of the house is called the "button".

When we went into the gym, we practiced sweeping and throwing.

This is a very picture heavy post.  I tried to get action shots of everyone…not an easy thing to do.  We had a lot of fun trying something new!

Take a look….
this is a sweeping relay, each person had to hop through the hoops and then sweep across the floor, around a cone and then back to the hoops for more hopping before tagging a teammate for their turn

we learned about how to score

in this picture, the yellow rock would have scored one point

now it's our turn!  It's a challenge to roll it hard enough but not too hard!

so far, blue is in the lead, but curling is a game of strategy

the score here is 2 points for blue

again, 2 points for blue

then we played a game where each person had a chance to knock the other person's rock out of the house.  If your rock stayed in the house, you got to stand in the circle of victory and do a happy dance!

if your rock got knocked out, you had to stand on the wall of sadness (sigh!)

circle of victory happy dance

these happy dances are so happy, they're hard to capture!

We had a great time curling today.  It's so much fun trying new things!
