Zz Sharing and More Measurement

This just in….. next Wednesday, May 11th, will be twin/multiple day at Brooksbank.  Some of the older classes are organizing this fun day and are encouraging kids to come to school dressed the same as someone else.  This is just for fun.  If your child would like to participate, start talking and see who has similar clothes that might work.

We had our last "family sharing" today.  It was so nice learning all of the special things about your families!

Then, after recess we did the "bean bag boogie" where we practiced balancing bean bags on different parts of our bodies while we boogied to the music!

Then, we learned a new way to measure.  We explored the balance scales.  And later we compared different objects to see if we could determine which were heavier.  We also worked at being good communicators, by talking together and taking turns while we worked in our groups.  

May and Measurement

Please note that our field trip to Maplewood Farm is coming up on the 17th (still missing forms from 4 people).

Also, on Friday we will be conducting an Emergency Release Drill.  This is something that we are required to do every two years.  We will be practicing releasing all of our students to their caregivers just as we would in the event of a real emergency.  Students will only be released to adults who are listed as emergency contacts.  Adults will be asked to show picture ID.  Adults will "register" in the gym and once ID has been checked, a student runner will come to the classroom to escort the students to the meeting place in the gym.  Students will remain in the classroom until a runner comes to retrieve them.  I believe the drill is scheduled to being at 1:00pm.  Please check emails that have been sent by the school for further information.

Also, we have had another head lice case in our class. Please check your child's head regularly.  If you do find lice and/or nits, please comb regularly (daily for at least a week) to remove any nits/lice that might be remaining. Treating with shampoo alone only takes care of the live lice that are on the head at the time.  We have also had lots of chats in the classroom about not touching other people's heads/hair and not sharing hats.

Miss Maria had us doing lots of measuring today.  We revisited the items that we measured last week, to refresh our memories and we compared all of those measurements (which is longer, which is shorter, which are equal).

We collected all of our data on a big chart so it was easy to compare the information.

Then we worked with a partner to measure each other using non-standard units.  Some used different blocks….

Please look in your child's backpack today for this oder form for school supplies for Grade 1.  You do not have to order through Edupac, if you'd rather buy the supplies individually yourself, that is just fine.  Edupac saves a trip to the stationary store and it ensures that you have all of the items that the Grade 1 teachers at Brooksbank are requesting.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

I am missing field trip forms for 6 students.  Please return the form to me as soon as you can, if you haven't done so already.  There has been a little bit of confusion regarding the cost (sorry about that). Each child will need to pay $5.50.  Any volunteering adults will need to pay $8.00.  Thanks!

Finally, Monday is a Professional Development Day for all of North Vancouver.  There is no school for students.  Teachers and staff will be involved in a variety of workshops.
