Rock and Roll

Today, we used rocks in different ways.  Some of us tried creating mosaic pictures with rocks, others tried building vertical sculptures.

can you see the penguin?

there is a small tower (black rocks) right by the black boot in the shadow of her body….I know you can't see it, but it's there!

can you see the tower?

Reminder….
Tomorrow is our Jump Rope For Heart event.  Please make sure that your child is wearing appropriate clothes and shoes for jumping!

Wear Your Sweater Tomorrow!

Reminder, tomorrow will be chilly in the school.  It's Sweater Day!

Oh, also, the forecast is calling for a lot of rain.  Please make sure that your child is prepared for wet weather!

Trying Something New

Today, I introduced weaving to the class.  It's something that we can all work on, all add to, and together we can create something beautiful.  When the loom was ready, one student expressed an interest in giving it a try.  He figured it out very quickly and then was able to teach someone else.  This is how we are going to work together.  Everybody will learn from someone who has learned from someone else and soon we will have a classroom full of weaving experts.  If your child hasn't had a turn yet, please let them know that he/she will soon.  Oh, we would love to add a variety of different colors and thicknesses and textures to our loom….if you have any yarn that you're not planning on using, we would be happy to weave it!

Penguin Parents

We have started a "mini unit" learning all about penguins.  Today we practiced what it would be like to have to balance an egg on our feet for 2 months…I don't think any of us even lasted 2 minutes!  Then we tried passing an egg from the female to the male.  Did you know that after a female Emperor penguin lays an egg, she passes it to her mate and then returns to the sea to eat for the next 2 months.  The male then looks after the egg during the dead of winter, without any food for 2 months.  The males huddle together for warmth and protection from the bitterly cold wind.  We tried moving together to form a huddle all while trying not to let our "eggs" roll off our feet and onto the "ice".  Take a look…...

Sweaters and Sharing and Jump Rope for Heart

Tomorrow is M sharing.  Please help your child find something around the house that begins with the letter M.

Thursday is sweater day.  In an effort to raise awareness about energy usage, we (and several other schools) will be turing the heat down in the school on Thursday and encouraging everyone to wear sweaters to school.

Also, just a reminder about our Jump Rope for Heart fundraising campaign.  You should have received all of the information last week in your child's home envelope.  Our day to jump is February 11.

Finally, please remember that next Monday, February 9th, is Family Day in BC.  Schools will be closed.

Did the Kindergarteners See Their Shadows?

Happy Groundhog Day!  We went outside this morning to see if we could see our shadows.  (Remember, if the groundhog sees his shadow, he gets frightened and runs back into his den and we get 6 more weeks of winter.  If he doesn't, it signals an early spring).  So we went out and looked everywhere for our shadows, none to be seen….so if we were groundhogs, spring would be on it's way!

We also made some predictions.  13 kids in the class thought that the groundhog would see his shadow and only 5 thought he wouldn't.

We read a few books about groundhogs and then we made a little den for a groundhog and a stick puppet to see if he'll see his shadow.  (thanks for all the toilet paper rolls).

Then, we watched a clip of the groundhog in Pennsylvania (Punxsutawney Phil) and learned that he DID see his shadow, so we're in for a longer winter.

Have a look at some of the things we did today….
