Today we worked on "observing closely". We looked at some marigold plants and reviewed all the things that plants need to grow and survive. We are going to find out what happens when a plant doesn't get all of these things. There are several experiments set up in the classroom. There are several marigold plants that are going to continue to receive sunlight, water, soil and their roots are intact. There are other plants that are going to not receive all of the things we think they need. One plant will not be watered. One will not be exposed to light. Another will have no soil and yet another will have no roots. We are going to observe them over the next little while and see what happens.
This afternoon, we went on a forest walk so that we could observe leaves closely.
We each had a bag of supplies (a clipboard and some crayons).
First we explored the forest to see what kinds of things we could find.

Then we went looking for one special leaf that we wanted to observe closely and used our materials to draw a scientific picture showing all the details that we see.
When we were finished drawing, we showed our pictures and our leaves to our friends.
This afternoon, we used some special "plates" and learned how to make rubbings. We'll try again with real leaves soon!
