Numbers and Letters, Oh My!

Today, we explored the number 8 and created number stories (6+2=8) using things in our classroom.

Some kids chose to "build" their equations and tell them orally.

others drew pictures of their equations and also wrote the number sentences on paper

others represented with objects and wrote the equations on paper

some had three addends (for example: 4+3+1=8)

some just worked on paper

some grouped numbers together (2 ones + 2 ones + 2 ones +2 ones =8)

counting and rechecking

such focus and hard work!

After recess, we rotted through 5 different alphabet stations.

Here, we practiced writing the letters of the alphabet in sequence, filling in the missing letters.  This little group chose to challenge themselves because they chose papers that didn't have any letters already written on them.

We also sorted words by syllables.

We worked hard to fill in the missing letter from a 3 letter word.

We sorted objects based on their beginning sounds.

We practiced generating and writing "at" words: words that follow the _at pattern (bat, cat, mat, rat, sat)

Then, after 5 minutes, we moved to the next station to start again.

What a productive and fun Friday we had!

Have a great weekend!
