Candy Canes, Rhyming and Concert Practice

We started our day today making beaded candy canes to decorate our classroom Christmas tree.  We were able to practice our patterning skills and create something beautiful and decorative.

After recess, we read a story about the Gingerbread Man.  After reading the story, we talked about words that rhyme with man and wrote them down together, sounding our the beginning sounds of each word.  We also noticed the spelling pattern in these rhyming words.

Then we worked on a funny little booklet that helped us practice our rhyming words.  The kids had to go on an "an" word hunt and circle the words that rhymed with man.

Some kids challenged themselves to look for even more words that rhymed with man.

And some even worked on the back of their booklets, writing as many "an" words as they could think of!

Then, when we were done, we moved to the carpet to practice reading our booklets.  And we learned how to track the words with our fingers as we read.

This little booklet came home today.  Ask your child about the rhyming words that he/she heard.  Practice looking for/hearing rhyming words in other stories that you read together.

This afternoon, we went into the gym to practice for the Christmas Concert.  We practiced our song and our dance.

A cool plasticine creation

Someone spent a LOT of time organizing the cupboards in the house centre today!  Thank you!

Another cool plasticine creation.

I sent an email home about extra Christmas Concert tickets today.  If you did not receive the tickets your requested, there is still time.  What happens now is people who don't need the tickets they received will return them to the office and they will be redistributed to people who are seeking tickets.  Saying that, if you have an extra ticket that you will not be using, please return it to the office so it can be used by someone else.

Also, in the email, I let you know that your child's report card came home today too.  Please sign and return the envelope so that it can be reused in the next reporting periods.  Please keep the report at home.  Thank you!
